According to the United States Geological Survey website, the Salt Lake valley has had an increase in seismic activity over the past two weeks with a total of 24 being recorded.  Utah Emergency Management is warning residents that aftershocks are likely so take shelter and limit travel. No deaths have been reported

Power has been knocked out to more than 55,000 people in the area. Rocky Mountain Power said in a tweet that crews are assessing the damage and working to get electricity restored as fast as possible. It's not yet clear whether anyone was hurt.  Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is asking everyone to stay away from downtown Salt Lake City while emergency responders work . 

The Salt Lake City Airport "is not currently operational," according airport officials. The FAA tower, terminals, and concourses have been evacuated, and the road to the airport has been reopened so passengers can be picked up.  Planes headed to Salt Lake City now are being diverted to other airports. All flights into Salt Lake City from the Boise Airport and other airports around the country are listed as delayed, and will likely be canceled.
