Wednesday news and weather 7/3/24

Wednesday 070324

This holiday weekend, police will be out in force looking for impaired drivers.  Independence Day celebrations fall within the 100 Deadliest Days on Idaho roads - between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, marked by increased fatal accidents. Preliminary data from OHS shows that 31 people have lost their lives in crashes in Idaho since Memorial Day weekend this year.

The open primaries initiative is one step closer to appearing on your ballot this November.   Idahoans for Open Primaries, the group behind the initiative, delivered 97 thousand signatures to the Secretary of State's Office yesterday. County clerks across the Gem State have already verified signatures for the individual counties. However, the Secretary of State's Office will do a final verification before the initiative officially qualifies for the ballot.

The ACLU of Idaho, on behalf of three people who are incarcerated in Idaho, has filed a federal lawsuit in the Idaho District Court against state officials over a new law that bans public funds from going toward gender-affirming care. House Bill 668 took effect on Monday, and it prevents the use of taxpayer funds from covering gender-affirming medication and surgeries for adults and children. That includes Idaho Medicaid.

The man who murdered 19-year-old Dylan Rounds, a former Idaho resident who was living in Utah, was sentenced Monday as part of a plea deal.  60-year-old James Brenner will spend at least three years and a maximum of 30 years in prison.

A red flag warning has been issued for southern Idaho today.  Weather forecasters say strong winds of upwards to 40 mph and low humidity will make the fire danger high.

The Idaho inmate who was at the center of a high profile prison escape back in March was in two Ada County courtrooms yesterday.  At his appearances, Skylar Meade entered guilty pleas for two charges related to his possession of methamphetamine.  Meade is expected to return to court on July 19 for an appearance stemming from the violent escape from St. Alphonsus. He was arrested days later in Twin Falls.
